Duck Trails on the Mystic:

Posted on 1/05/2014 by Unknown | 0 comments

You know it's cold when the Mystic River freezes over.  It takes a few nights around zero for this to happen.  I order to get the starburst effect on the sunset, you have to increase your F-stop to as high as it will go.  Enjoy.

Riding the Storm Out!

A gaggle of geese sleeping along the banks of the Mystic River in Medford, MA during the first snowstorm of 2014.

Bridge from the other side. Medford, MA:

You've seen it before in my pics, but this is a shot of the John Hand bridge spanning the Mystic River from the opposite side looking back at my office.  My office is just over the bridge in the ground level of the brick building.  Enjoy.

The Lonely Bench

A park bench sits isolated on the park by the Mystic River the day of the Blizzard of 2013.  Enjoy

Like a Bridge over Foggy Waters:

Posted on 1/14/2013 by Unknown | 0 comments

I've never seen this before in the 14 years I've had my office here.  The Fog just came up over the Mystic River quickly and as soon as it was there it left.  I ran out to grab this shot of the Rt. 16 Bridge, which I do frequently, but this was pretty eerie stuff.  Enjoy

This is one of those uniquely rare moments that the sun is low enough in the sky, that the reflection comes all the way under the Rt 16 bridge here in Medford, and illuminates the underside of the arch.  Taken right outside my office on the patio.  Mystic river reflection.  Enjoy.

Unexpected Surprise

Posted on 5/22/2012 by Unknown | 0 comments

I was so looking forward to taking pics of the giant perigree moon a few weeks ago, but the fog came in so fast over the Atlantic, that it reduced visibility to less than 50'.  While waiting for the sun to set and the moon to rise, I was walking around behind the local Cosco and saw this nice inlet of the Mystic River and the sunset was casting it's pink on the clouds.  I never even knew this was here, and just out of frame to the left is Boston.  Enjoy.

Ramped up Sunset

Posted on 2/07/2012 by Unknown | 0 comments

Just about to leave work and glanced out the window, grabbed the old camera at work and shot this sunset through the trees. Aren't Lightroom's sliders fun? Reduced clarity, increased saturation and vibrance. 30 seconds, done. Loved the colors this way. Enjoy.

I was looking for the full moon tonight but the clouds are messing up the deal.

Medford Cover Art

Posted on 1/26/2012 by Unknown | 0 comments

This is pretty cool. I'm working with a company called Community Connection, our local phone book company to provide cover photos for a handful of their 2012 phone books around Massachusetts. It started out with my town, Medford. It looks like I'll be doing other cities and towns as well. This is my first one. - A photo of the Mystic River in Medford Square. Enjoy.

Ice Painting

Posted on 1/20/2012 by Unknown | 0 comments

We've all seen ice sculptures, but this is natures way of painting the water. This is ice on the Mystic River that seldom forms unless it's below 15 degrees. It looks like it was painted by the guy from PBS with the giant afro and soft voice. Remember that guy? He always painted those pristine, yet fake landscapes from nowhere. I loved watching him. I can hear him describing his techniques on this one. Enjoy.

It finally snowed!

Posted on 1/17/2012 by Unknown | 0 comments

We finally had our first snow in New England. I wouldn't call it much of anything, but I thought I'd post this pic of the Mystic River from one of last year's snowstorms to get us in the mood for more. It's going to be 45 today, so it won't last long. Enjoy.

Orange Line Sunset

Fall sunset over the Mystic River. The bridge in the background is the Orange Line commuter rail. Enjoy

Winter on the Mystic

Posted on 11/22/2011 by Unknown | 0 comments

Just getting in the spirit of things this time of year brings me to this photo. I took this last year on the John Hand bridge in Medford, MA. This is adjacent to my offices which are off to the right. It was such a beautiful morning after a soft and thick overnight snowfall. Enjoy.

Leaves a Fire

Posted on 11/17/2011 by Unknown | 0 comments

How's this for a view outside my office? Add a little soft focus and warmth and the trees look like they are on fire. So sad the leaves are almost gone. The colors turned so erratically this fall, I had a hard time finding a bunch of trees turning color at the same time. Enjoy.

The Framing Branch

Posted on 11/15/2011 by Unknown | 0 comments

When near a river, I'm always looking for branches to frame buildings, bridges, etc.   Fall is a great time of year to get the leaves to provide a color punch.  This is the Rt.16 Bridge over the Mystic River.  I kind of cheated, it's right outside my office.  I had to noodle my camera outside the fence and hold it against the rail to steady this hand held shot.  Enjoy.

Sepia Saturday?

Posted on 10/08/2011 by Unknown | 0 comments

So really? This is "Sepia Saturday"? I'm really not with the program.  Anyway, this is a shot I took a couple of years ago post heavy snowstorm along the Mystic River. You can't see the river, it's to the right, but this is one of the railings that keeps you from falling in. I processed it then converted to B&W, and thought giving it the sepia treatment would do it justice. All done in Lightroom. Enjoy.

The Fishermen

Posted on 6/24/2011 by Unknown | 0 comments

I got up at about 4:30AM, drove 45 minutes in anticipation of an awesome foggy morning on the river, but neither turned out as expected.  The mosquitoes were relentless though. I did manage to get these two guys fishing early in the morning on the Carlisle River.  Enjoy.

Amelia Earhart Dam

Posted on 6/19/2011 by Unknown | 0 comments

It's not the most beautiful of buildings, but without this 1967 built Dam, the Mystic River would still be a tidal river.  I took this sunset photo where I hadn't intended on taking a photo of it.  Thank you mother nature for the wonderful sky.  Happy Fathers Day,  Enjoy.

Mystic River Sunset

It looked like it was going to be a good night for some sunset pics.  This one was taken from the Craddock Bridge in Medford Square looking over the Mystic River.  Enjoy.

The Fluffy Stuff

Posted on 2/02/2011 by Unknown | 0 comments

Here is a shot of the John Hand foot bridge across the Mystic River during the light (10") fluffy snowstorm of 2/1/11.  Taken just outside my office on my patio.  Notice the swan just passing under the bridge.  Enjoy.
